Your Invoice's Digital Fingerprint: Beyond a Simple Copy

Imagine that each electronic invoice you issue or receive is like a unique physical document. If you wanted to ensure that document hasn't been altered since it left your hands, what would you do? You would probably compare the original with a copy. In the digital world, this process is carried out in a much more sophisticated and secure way through the generation of a digital fingerprint, also known as a hash.

What is a Hash and How is it Generated?

A hash is a fixed-length string of characters generated from a set of input data (in this case, the content of your electronic invoice). It is the result of applying a complex mathematical function, called a cryptographic hash function, to all the information contained within the document. The fundamental aspects of these functions are that they are one-way (meaning it is practically impossible to reconstruct the original document from its hash) and highly sensitive to any change (even altering a single character in the original document will generate a completely different hash).

Think of it as a unique and unrepeatable digital summary. If your invoice content is "Invoice #123, client X, amount €100," the hash function, upon processing this information, will generate a character sequence such as: a1b2c3d4e5f67890.... If you modify the amount to €101, the new hash will be entirely different, say z9y8x7w6v5u4t3s2.... This property is the cornerstone of information integrity.

SHA-256 Chaining: Reinforced Security
